Wash & Cure L
Resin Post Processing ⋅ 2021
Introduction
Unlike alternative technologies such as FDM, all 3D printed resin parts require post processing to remove uncured resin and reach optimal material priorities. Doing it manually can be messy, time consuming, and prone to user error. The Form Wash L and Form Cure L automate this process to provide Formlabs users with a professional, accessible solution to get the most out of the Form 3L and Form 4L ecosystem.

My Role
This project was led by Nate Jeffery, the manager of Industrial Design at the time. I contributed to both projects during the concept and prototyping phases, after which we each took full ownership of a machine. I became the primary designer of the Form Wash L, responsible for advanced prototyping, user testing, production CAD, and cosmetic specification documentation.
Completing the large format ecosystem.
When setting out to design a large format version of Formlabs' post processing machines, I took inspiration from my previous work designing the Form 3L. Large aluminum shells, minimalist forms, highly visible touchpoints, advanced quality-of-life features, and tangible reliability dominated my early explorations. We were also working extremely quickly; many prospective customers refused to purchase Form 3L until these machines came to market. Ultimately, the Form Wash L and Form Cure L deliver a clean, easy to use experience that completes Formlabs' large format ecosystem.
Form Wash L
Worry-free part washing.
Washing resin parts can be an extremely messy experience that turns possible adoptees away from buying resin based 3D printers. I designed the Form Wash L to address as many of these concerns as possible, separating the user from the solvent and focusing on what they care about: their part, perfectly washed, every time. The industrial design of the machine incorporates thick aluminum shells and a rigid internal frame to communicate robustness and trustworthiness to the user, with an angled top surface to improve access and visibility of the touch screen display. With an automated fork to assist with part drying, an integrated pump for solvent management, and a smart saturation sensor to alert the user when the solvent needs replacement, the Form Wash L makes washing parts a clean, easy, and less physically demanding experience.
Form Cure L
Simple, effective part curing.
Curing resin parts is required for them to fully solidify and reach Formlabs' quoted material properties. We designed the Form Cure L with a large door that maximizes physical access and visibility to the interior of the machine, with a silicone handle to improve grip and comfort. It retains the same hardware design language as the Form Wash L, with thick aluminum shells and an angled front surface to improve touchscreen ergonomics. Inside, powerful light modules use a combination of UV and white LEDs to cure parts, indicate machine status to the user, and further improve visibility when using the machine. These light modules are fully replaceable to increase product lifetime and simplify user maintenance.
